Onycholysis Rash

« Back to Glossary Index

Onycholysis is a term used to describe a condition where the nail plate becomes separated from the nail bed. It is characterized by the detachment of the nail, usually starting from the distal or free edge and progressing proximally towards the cuticle. This detachment creates a gap between the nail and the underlying skin, which can appear as a white, yellow, or green discolored band. Onycholysis can be caused by various factors including trauma, recurrent or chronic irritation, infection, psoriasis, dermatitis, allergic reactions, or certain medications. It is not typically considered a rash, but rather a nail disorder.
