Black Toenail
« Back to Glossary Index
Black toenail, also known as subungual hematoma, is a condition characterized by discoloration or darkening of the toenail. It occurs when blood accumulates underneath the nail, usually as a result of trauma or injury to the toe. This injury can include stubbing the toe, dropping something heavy on it, or repetitive pressure from sports activities such as running or kicking. The blood pooling under the nail causes it to appear black or dark in color, and in some cases, the nail may become painful, swollen, or detached from the nail bed. It is important to seek medical attention if there is severe pain, signs of infection, or if the discoloration does not improve or worsens over time.
