Onychomycosis
Onychomycosis is a medical term used to describe a fungal infection that affects the toenails. It is a common condition that occurs when fungi, such as dermatophytes, invade the nail plate and surrounding tissues. Onychomycosis can cause the nails to become discolored, thickened, brittle, and distorted in shape. It may also lead to discomfort, pain, and difficulty in walking or wearing shoes. The condition can be contagious and is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems, diabetes, poor circulation, or who have had previous nail trauma. Treatment options include topical antifungal medications, oral antifungal drugs, and in severe cases, surgical procedures. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
