Onychocryptosis

« Back to Glossary Index

Onychocryptosis, also commonly known as an ingrown toenail, is a common nail condition in which the edge or corner of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and potential infection. It typically affects the big toe but can occur in any toenail. Ingrown toenails can be caused by various factors such as improper nail trimming, tight-fitting shoes, trauma to the toenail, or genetic predisposition. Treatment options range from conservative measures like warm water soaks and wearing open-toed shoes to more advanced interventions such as partial nail removal or surgical excision.
