Onychomadesis

« Back to Glossary Index

Onychomadesis is a condition that refers to the separation or detachment of the toenail from the nail bed. It is often characterized by the gradual or sudden shedding of the toenail and can occur due to various causes such as trauma, fungal infections, systemic illnesses, certain medications, autoimmune diseases, and chemotherapy. It typically starts at the proximal (cuticle) end of the nail and progresses towards the free edge. Onychomadesis can result in temporary or permanent nail loss, and the nail may eventually regrow after the underlying cause has been treated or resolved.
