Paronychia

« Back to Glossary Index

Paronychia is a common condition that occurs when the skin around the toenail becomes inflamed and infected. It is often caused by bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus, but it can also be caused by fungi or other pathogens. Typically, paronychia is characterized by redness, swelling, and tenderness around the affected toenail. In some cases, pus may also be present. Paronychia can be either acute, which means it develops suddenly, or chronic, which means it persists over a long period of time. Treatment often involves warm soaks, keeping the area clean and dry, and in some cases, antibiotics or antifungal medication may be necessary.
