Toenail Fungus
« Back to Glossary Index
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that affects the toenails. It is a common condition in which the fungus invades the nails, causing them to become thickened, discolored, brittle, and crumbly. It typically begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail and can spread to the entire nail if left untreated. Toenail fungus is often caused by the growth of fungi called dermatophytes, but can also be caused by yeasts or molds. It is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems, those who wear tight-fitting shoes, or those who have poor foot hygiene. Treatment options may include topical or oral antifungal medications, laser therapy, or in severe cases, nail removal.
