Fungal Nail Infection
« Back to Glossary Index
Fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition that affects the toenails. It is caused by a fungal infection that invades the nail bed, resulting in thickened, discolored, or brittle nails. Fungal nail infections are usually painless but can cause discomfort or pain if left untreated. The infection might start at the end of the nail and gradually spread to the entire nail if not properly addressed. Fungal nail infections can be acquired through direct contact with the fungus or by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces.
