Thickened Nails

« Back to Glossary Index

Thickened nails, medically known as onychauxis, refer to a condition where the nails become unusually thickened and hardened. This usually occurs when there is an excess production of keratin, the protein that makes up nails. Thickened nails can be caused by various factors, including fungal infections, trauma or injury to the nail, psoriasis, certain systemic conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders, and aging. The nails may appear yellowish, opaque, and may become difficult to trim or maintain. It is important to diagnose the underlying cause of thickened nails in order to determine the appropriate treatment.
