Dermatophyte

« Back to Glossary Index

Dermatophytes are a type of fungi that mainly infect the skin, hair, and nails. In the context of toenail conditions, a dermatophyte refers to a specific type of fungus that invades and colonizes the toenail, causing an infection known as onychomycosis or fungal nail infection. These fungi thrive in warm and humid environments, making the feet a common area for infection. Dermatophytes feed on keratin, a protein found in nails, hair, and skin, leading to the characteristic symptoms of toenail fungal infection such as thickening, discoloration, brittle nails, and crumbling.
