Hammertoe

« Back to Glossary Index

Hammertoe is a condition characterized by an abnormal bending or curling of one or more toes, typically affecting the second, third, fourth, or fifth toe. It gets its name due to the toe resembling a hammer-like shape. Hammertoe can be caused by several factors, such as muscle imbalance, arthritis, wearing poorly fitted shoes, or genetically inherited foot structure. Common symptoms include pain, discomfort, corns or calluses on the affected toe, and difficulty in finding properly fitting footwear. Treatments for hammertoe range from wearing more comfortable shoes, using orthotic devices or toe splints, performing foot exercises, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the deformity. It is important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
