Muehrcke’s Lines

« Back to Glossary Index

Muehrcke’s lines or Muehrcke’s nails are a nail condition characterized by horizontal white lines that run parallel to the nail fold in the fingernails and toenails. These lines are not ridges or indentations but are actually areas of low albumin concentration in the nail bed blood vessels. As a result, the nails appear to have alternating bands of normal and white coloration. Muehrcke’s lines are usually painless and typically do not cause any symptoms.
