Onychodermal Band

« Back to Glossary Index

The onychodermal band refers to the thickened area of tissue that forms at the junction between the nail plate and the underlying skin of the toe. It is also known as the hyponychium. The primary function of the onychodermal band is to act as a seal, preventing debris and pathogens from entering under the nail plate. In toe nail conditions, such as fungal infections, trauma, or ingrown nails, the onychodermal band can become inflamed, thickened, or damaged, causing various symptoms like pain, redness, or swelling.
