Subungual Melanoma

« Back to Glossary Index

Subungual melanoma is a rare form of skin cancer that develops under the nail. It arises from pigmented cells called melanocytes, which are responsible for giving color to our skin and nails. This specific type of melanoma typically affects the big toe and presents as a dark-colored or black streak or spot on the nail. It can gradually spread to the nearby skin and tissues if left untreated. Subungual melanoma is often mistaken for a fungal infection or injury due to its similar appearance, which can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
